NEWS RELEASE: CVWMA Curbside Recycling Up 34% in Henrico, Hanover and Goochland

RICHMOND — Curbside recycling collected last fiscal year in Henrico, Hanover and Goochland rose 34% compared to the previous fiscal year, according to the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority.

In the spring of 2023, CVWMA distributed large, rolling recycling carts to thousands of homes in the three counties.

“We’re thrilled that Henrico, Hanover and Goochland residents are using their recycling carts and recycling more at the curb,” CVMWA Executive Director Kim Hynes said. “The increase in collection is a sign that the large carts not only drive participation in recycling, but they also enable people to recycle more. Material is kept contained and dry in the lidded cart, which ensures it will be recycled.”

CVWMA’s announcement comes on America Recycles Day (Nov. 15), a day to recognize the impact of recycling on the environment, our communities and the economy.

In May and June 2023, CVWMA delivered 92,000 of the green recycling carts to Henrico, Hanover and Goochland residences.

The bulk went to households in Henrico County, where curbside recycling is provided by the county to all single-family households.

“Henrico County is pleased to partner with CVWMA and invest in this regional program,” Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas said. “The green recycling carts in our communities are a very visual symbol of the county’s commitment to curbside recycling. By wasting less and recycling more, we are able to keep trash collection costs lower and save space in our landfills.”

CVWMA received a $1.5 million grant from The Recycling Partnership to pay for the manufacture and distribution of the carts. Each cart contains 35% post-consumer recycled plastic, about 10% of which was sourced from Central Virginia’s own recycling.

“Seeing a 34% increase in curbside recycling is fantastic and really shows how committed our residents are to making a difference,” Hanover County Administrator John A. Budesky said. “These larger recycling carts have made it easier for everyone to recycle more and waste less. It’s a simple change that’s having a big impact, and we’re excited to be part of this effort alongside CVWMA and our neighboring counties.”

“The large recycling carts have encouraged Goochland citizens to participate in the recycling program to an even greater extent,” Goochland County Administrator Vic Carpenter said. “Making recycling more convenient supports their desire to be good stewards of the environment, which is a great step forward.”

CVWMA coordinates the curbside recycling program in the Town of Ashland, Colonial Heights, Henrico County, Hopewell, Petersburg, Richmond, and parts of Hanover and Goochland counties.

A total of 58 million pounds of curbside recycling was collected from all eight localities in fiscal year 2024, nearly 6 million pounds more than the previous year.

CVWMA is a public service authority established in 1990 that coordinates recycling and trash programs on behalf of 13 member jurisdictions. The member jurisdictions are: Town of Ashland, Charles City County, Chesterfield County, City of Colonial Heights, Goochland County, Hanover County, Henrico County, City of Hopewell, New Kent County, City of Petersburg, Powhatan County, Prince George County and City of Richmond. Programs vary by locality.
