RICHMOND — The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority will launch “Bucks for Boxes,” a cardboard box recycling contest, on America Recycles Day, Nov. 15, 2024.

CVWMA staff will be scouring neighborhoods and local recycling drop-off centers to find people who are recycling cardboard boxes correctly. That means the clean and dry boxes are empty, flattened (broken down) and inside the curbside or drop-off container.

One recycler per week will be selected at random to win $100. The contest begins Nov. 15 and ends Jan. 10, when mail-order purchases will be at their peak for the holiday season.

The contest is open to residential recyclers only. No businesses or workplaces. Eligible winners must be recycling at the curb, a drop-off or a local government convenience center, in one of these localities:

  • City of Richmond
  • Chesterfield County
  • Henrico County
  • Hanover County
  • Goochland County
  • City of Colonial Heights
  • City of Hopewell
  • City of Petersburg
  • New Kent County
  • Powhatan County
  • Town of Ashland
  • Prince George County
  • Charles City County

“The purpose of the contest is to encourage everyone to recycle their cardboard boxes and keep them out of landfills,” said CVWMA Executive Director Kim Hynes. “Cardboard is a highly valuable commodity for recycling. Manufacturers and mills right here in Central Virginia rely on our good, clean cardboard to feed their operations.”

CVWMA promotes the reuse of cardboard boxes as much as possible.

But, when it’s time to recycle, the authority requires boxes be clean, dry, empty and flattened. Boxes must be placed in a container, not beside or on top of it. This goes for curbside collection and drop-off recycling.

What’s in a box?

  • Most cardboard boxes are 100% recyclable.
  • Recycling cardboard conserves energy, saves trees and creates jobs.
  • The same piece of cardboard can be recycled approximately seven times.
  • At least 50% of a corrugated box is made from recycled materials.
  • Cardboard can be recycled into products like paper towels, tissues and more boxes.

Recycling in our region

America Recycles Day on Nov. 15 is a day to rally around recycling and celebrate its impact on the environment, our communities and the economy.

The Central Virginia region consistently recycles more than half of its waste. In 2022, the regional recycling rate was 57.7%, well above the state requirement of 25%.

CVWMA recycling programs, as well as recycling by local businesses and industries, contribute to the regional recycling rate.
