More about the changes
WM will be the trash service provider for the City of Hopewell beginning July 1, 2024. The service will be through a competitively procured contract with CVWMA and the city.
Hopewell residents will see some changes as a result of this contract: new trash carts, collection day changes and a process for requesting bulky waste pickup.
Please refer back to this page for details about this exciting transition.

Is my trash day changing?
It might. Collection day will change July 1 for about half the city’s homes and businesses. See if your trash day is changing. Enter your address in the CVWMA customer portal.
Also, watch your mailbox in June for a postcard announcing your collection day.
When will I get my new trash cart?
New carts will be delivered citywide starting June 17. There is no fee for the cart.
What do I do with my old trash cart?
Following your regular collection the week of June 24, leave old trash carts at the curb. They will be removed. Trash will be collected only from the new black and gray cart beginning July 1.
What about items that don’t fit in the cart?
Items that don’t fit in the cart are considered bulky waste. This includes furniture, mattresses and box springs, appliances, bagged leaves, brush and yard waste, and occasional extra bags of trash.
Bulky waste will be collected at no charge. You must request bulky waste pickup by 2 p.m. the previous business day. The load must fit in the back of a standard-sized pickup truck. Larger loads will require a fee.
Submit your bulky waste request one of these ways:
- Option 1: Online at CVWMA.com – use the customer portal.
- Option 2: Email customerservice@cvwma.com. Include your full address and list of items.
- Option 3: Call 804-340-0900 Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Will there be changes to recycling?
No, your recycling service will not change. For information, visit CVWMA.com/recycle-right.
How do I place my cart?
- Set out your trash cart by 7 a.m. on collection day.
- Wheels must be at the curb, with lid opening toward the street.
- Leave the cart at least 3 feet from mailboxes, vehicles and other carts.
- Leave at least 4 feet of clearance beneath overhead obstructions like utility lines and tree limbs.
Each home and business is provided a 95-gallon trash cart.
Trash is collected in most areas on Monday or Tuesday (look up your exact day with the CVWMA web tool). In Downtown Hopewell, trash is collected on Thursdays.
Collection begins at 7 a.m.
Bulky waste includes items such as mattresses, furniture, yard waste, appliances and items too large to fit in the trash cart.
Bulky waste is collected the same day as trash.
