Once Halloween has come and gone, many people will be looking to rid their porch of ol’ Jack.
In the U.S., we throw away 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkin every year.
Why not give our pumpkins a sustainable send-off, while conserving space in local landfills?
Here are some options in Central Virginia:
- Henrico County Pumpkin Composting Kickoff
Henrico residents can drop off pumpkins for composting and learn about the county’s upcoming food-scrap composting program at the public-use areas.

For ages 13-17. Join Hopewell Recreation and Parks for a smashing good time at the Pumpkin Smash Bash! Help us give leftover Halloween pumpkins a grand send-off.

Bring your ready-to-smash pumpkin to the fashion park’s interior. You’ll be able to drop, stomp and smash your pumpkin. Pieces will be hauled away for composting by Enrich Compost.
