Recycling in Charles City

Find out how and where to recycle various items

Charles City County offers three sites located in the county for disposal of most residential waste generated by residents.

The centers are provided for the residents of Charles City at no cost to the citizens through our landfill agreement with Waste Management. The centers are for regular household trash and recycables. To use these sites a customer must have one of the following:

1. Current Charles City County Vehicle Sticker;

2. Letter from Director of Public Utilities; or

3. Refuse Sticker or Permit issued by Charles City County Public Works.

 

 

Appliances (White Goods)

Appliances and white goods such as refrigerators, stoves, washing machines. Recycle at Charles City County Solid Waste Convenience Centers. All liquids must be drained from items. Fees may apply for freon removal.

Microwaves, toasters, blenders, mixers, toaster oven, etc (smaller type appliances). Recycle at CVWMA special electronics recycling collection event.

Automobile Fluids

Used Oil and Used Antifreeze (residential only). Recyle at the Munford Road Convenience Center during normal business hours. Quantities of five gallons or less.

Batteries

Alkaline. Safe for disposal in your trash.

Rechargeable. Clothing and Shoes

Donate to local charity or resell at consignment stores. Check telephone directly or search online for phone numbers of local charities or consignment stores.

Electronics

Recycle unwanted electronics.

Cell Phones. Donate or return to your cellular service provider.Recycle at CVWMA special electronics recycling collection event

Computers and Computer Accessories. Computer systems (hard drive, CPU, monitor),Computer accessories (cables, wires, keyboards, mice, speakers, etc.),Printers, scanners & copiers,Fax machines,VCRs & camcorders, Stereos, etc. .Recycle at  CVWMA special collection event or donate to charitable organization. Before donating a computer to a charitable organization (such as Goodwill or Salvation Army), find out if the organization has use for your particular model. Televisions. Recycle at CVWMA special collection event (fees may apply) or donate working TV’s to charitable organization. Newer, operational items may be donatable to a charitable organization, but check first to find out if the item is desired.See telephone directory or search online for addresses and phone numbers of charitable organizations.

Stereos and VCRs. Recycle at  CVWMA special collection event or donate to charitable organization. Before donating a computer to a charitable organization (such as Goodwill or Salvation Army), find out if the organization has use for your particular model. Glass

Glass bottles and jars (no lids please). Recycle at Charles City County  Convenience Centers.

No other glass items accepted for recycling.

Lawnmowers

Push Mowers and Weed Eaters. Motors must be stripped and drained of any fluids. Recycle at Charles City County Solid Waste Convenience Centers.

Riding Lawn Mowers. Need to go to Charles City County Landfill during normal business hours.

Metal

Aluminum and steel cans ( no lids, please). Recycle at Charles City County  Convenience Centers.

Check with county staff on other type of accepted metals for recycling.

Paints and Solvents

Latex Paint. Only paint cans that have been dried with kitty litter or other drying agent accepted. Dispose of at Charles City County Solid Waste Convenience Centers.

Other paints (oil-based) and solvents not accepted. Check with county staff for special Household Hazardous Waste Collection events.

Paper

Cardboard boxes and Mixed Paper (such as brown paper bags, newspaper, magazines, junk mail, cracker boxes, cereal boxes, macaroni boxes, phone books, white office paper.) Recycle at Charles City County  Convenience Centers.

Plastics

NO PLASTIC BAGS, please. Recycle at local retail stores

Plastic bottles (#1 and # 2, narrow-neck only). Recycle at Charles City County  Convenience Centers.

Propane Tanks

Tires

Used Tires. Return to retail location whe new tires are purchased or recycle at annual Charles City County Tire Amnesty Day.

Yard and Vegetative

Tree limbs and brush over four (4) feet long and or limbs not bundled and bagged are not accepted at Charles City County Solid Waste Convenience Centers. Large loads that are not bundled may be taken directly to the Charles City County landfill. The load must be weighed.
