HOPEWELL — The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority is preparing to roll out a new program for residential trash pickup in the City of Hopewell.

Starting July 1, WM (Waste Management) will take over weekly trash collection in Hopewell. This will be through a competitively procured contract between CVWMA, the City of Hopewell and WM. The contract period is for five years, with an option for a five-year renewal.

The new program will mean collection day changes effective July 1 and a new, rolling trash cart for every household in the program.

“CVWMA is very excited for this transition,” said CVWMA Executive Director Kim Hynes. “We have been working closely with the City of Hopewell to deliver a solid waste program that meets the needs of the community. We believe residents will be pleased with the upcoming changes.”

A town hall meeting is scheduled Monday, June 3, at 6:30 p.m., for residents to learn about the transition. The meeting will be at the Hopewell Community Center, 100 W. City Point Road.

Day changes and new containers
Postcards announcing new collection days will be mailed mid-June. Also in June, residents will be able to look up their collection day by entering their address in a customer portal at www.cvwma.com/hopewell.

New trash carts begin delivering June 17. The new carts are gray with black lids. These will be the only accepted containers for trash collection in Hopewell beginning July 1.

Removal of old trash carts
Old trash carts will be removed from curbs following residents’ final trash collection days in June (June 24 and 25). Residents are asked to leave all old, empty carts at the curb. Removal may take a couple of weeks.

Bulky waste collection – by request only
Weekly bulky waste collection is included in the new contract. Items that don’t fit in the trash cart are considered bulky waste. This could be furniture, old appliances or extra bags of trash. Starting July 1, requests must be made by 2 p.m. the previous business day. There will be no fee to pick up bulky loads, as long as all items can fit in the back of a standard-size pickup truck. Larger loads will require a fee to be paid in advance.

Recycling stays the same
CVWMA also coordinates the curbside and drop-off recycling in Hopewell. There will be no changes to these services. Residents are encouraged to recycle what they can and to recycle right. Recycling provides a vital stream of aluminum, cardboard, paper, plastic and glass for manufacturing. Hopewell’s rolling recycling carts are green with yellow lids.
