Find out how and where to recycle various items

Chesterfield County offers residents a variety of recycling programs for residents as well as residential household waste collection sites. Some of the programs offered are through the CVWMA and others the county has procured with its own contractor. Recycling services are for Chesterfield County residents only.

Appliances (White Goods)

Appliances and white goods such as refrigerators, stove, washing machines, air conditioners, dryers, etc.. Recycle at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers. Check with County staff directly for  fee information.

Microwaves, toasters, blenders, mixers, toaster oven, etc (smaller type appliances). Recycle at Chesterfield County’s permanent trailer at Southern Area Convenience Center or CVWMA special electronics recycling collection event.

Automobile Fluids

Check with Chesterfield County staff directly for fee information.

Antifreeze. Recycle at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers.  Check with gate staff for location in the recycling area.

Diesel Fuel. Recycle at the Chesterfield County Convenience Centers . Check with gate staff for location in the recycling area.

Gasoline. Recycle leaded and unleaded gasoline at the Chesterfield County Convenience Centers. Check with gate staff for location in the recycling area.

Motor Oil. Recycle at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers. Accepted items in the used motor oil tank include: motor oil, automatic transmission fluid, power steering fluid, diesel fuel, gear oil, Aviation turbine engine oil, hydraulic oil and fuel oil (#2, #4,#6).Check with gate staff for location in the recycling area.

Motor Oil Additives. Recycle motor oil additives at the Chesterfield County Convenience Centers . Check with gate staff for location in the recycling area.

Oil Filters. Recycle at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers. Check with gate staff for location in the recycling area.

Other Auto Fluids. Recycle auto fluids such as transmission fluid, power steering fluid, hydraulic fluid, gear oil, jet fuel, diesel fuel and fuel oil (#2, #4, #6) at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers . Check with gate staff for location in the recycling area.

 

Batteries

Check with Chesterfield County staff directly for fee information.

Alkaline. Safe for disposal in your trash.

Lead acid. Recycle at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers. Check with gate staff for location in the recycling area or automotive supply store. Rechargeable. Recycle at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers . Cartons

CVWMA Announces Changes to Its Residential Recycling (Curbside) and Drop-off Recycling Programs Starting July 1.

Recycle waxy coated milk, juice, juice boxes, soup, wine, creamer, egg substitutes. Rinse and place cap back on the carton before placing it in your recycling container.

Clothing and Shoes

Recycle at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers by placing items in blue Goodwill box or resell at local consignment stores or donate to Goodwill, Salvation Army, schools, churches, etc. See telephone directory or search online for addresses and phone numbers of charitable organizations or consignment stores.

Electronics

Recycle unwanted electronics. Check with Chesterfield County staff directly for fee information.

Cell Phones.  Recycle at Chesterfield County’s permanent electronics trailer at the Northern or Southern Convenience Centers or CVWMA special electronics recycling collection event, some electronics retailers, donate , or return to your cellular service provider.

Computers and Computer Accessories.  Computer systems (hard drive, CPU, monitor),Computer accessories (cables, wires, keyboards, mice, speakers, etc.),Printers, scanners & copiers,Fax machines,VCRs & camcorders, Stereos, etc. Recycle at Chesterfield County’s permanent electronics trailer at the Northern or Southern Convenience Centers or CVWMA special electronics recycling collection event. or donate to charitable organization. Before donating a computer to a charitable organization (such as Goodwill or Salvation Army), find out if the organization has use for your particular model. Televisions.  Recycle at Chesterfield County’s permanent electronics trailer at the Northern or Southern Convenience Center or CVWMA special electronics recycling collection event. (fees may apply) or donate working TV’s to charitable organization. Stereos and VCRs.   Recycle at Chesterfield County’s permanent electronics trailer at the Northern or Southern Convenience Center or CVWMA special electronics recycling collection event or donate to charitable organization. Before donating a computer to a charitable organization (such as Goodwill or Salvation Army), find out if the organization has use for your particular model. Limits on TVs/PCs at convenience centers permanent trailers

Glass

Glass bottles and jars (no lids please). Recycle through Chesterfield County’s curbside recycling collection program,  or at one of the drop-off recycling containers located at both Convenience Centers.

No other glass items accepted for recycling.

Metal

Aluminum and steel cans . Recycle through Chesterfield County’s curbside recycling collection program,  or at one of the drop-off recycling containers located at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers.

Miscellaneous Metal. Contact Chesterfield County staff to see if they can recycle your metal items. Paints and Solvents

Household Hazardous Chemicals Disposal- No Fee

Chesterfield County does not participate in this program through CVWMA.

Chesterfield County offers disposal services for a variety of household hazardous waste products at the Northern Area Convenience Center and the Southern Area Convenience Center. Waste products such as paints, pesticides, acids, solvents and aerosol cans can be disposed of at these sites. Auto batteries are also accepted at both convenience centers. A key benefit of this program is protecting the environment from illegal dumping and disposal of hazardous materials.

There is a 10 gallon limit for disposal of paint.

Please contact county staff directly. Assistance for proper disposal of these items will be provided by the site attendants.

Hours of Operation

 

 

Paper

Cardboard boxes and Mixed Paper (such as brown paper bags, newspaper, magazines, junk mail, cracker boxes, cereal boxes, macaroni boxes, phone books, paperback *books, white office paper.) Recycle through Chesterfield County’s curbside recycling collection program,  or at one of the drop-off recycling containers located at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers

No other type of paper items are accepted.

Plastics

NO PLASTIC BAGS, please. Recycle at local retail stores , no Styrofoam or food contaminated pizza boxes will be accepted.

Household kitchen, laundry and bath plastic bottles and containers (#1 -#7 on bottom), rinse and replace lids and caps (no food residue).

Recycle through Chesterfield County’s curbside recycling collection program,  or at one of the drop-off recycling containers located at the Chesterfield County Convenience Centers.

Can I recycle a motor oil bottle with a #2 on the bottom?

No. Motor oil residue has always been one of the biggest contaminants for our plastics markets. The oil residue seeps into the porous plastic and cannot be removed through the washing process after the plastic is ground up. Oil and water do not mix. Of course you should never try to rinse or wash a motor oil bottle yourself since motor oil down the sink or storm drain causes a much larger environmental crisis than a plastic bottle in the trash.

Tires

The County offer an annual Tire Amnesrt Day event.

 

 

 

Yard and Vegetative

Christmas Trees. Recycle at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers. Check with gate staff for location in the recycling area.

Yard Waste (brush). Recycle at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers. Check with gate staff for location in the recycling area.

Yard Waste (leaves, grass clippings). Compost at home or Recycle at Chesterfield County Convenience Centers. Check with gate staff for location in the recycling area.

  • Junk King of Central Virginia: local company that provides turnkey junk removal services to residential and business customers in great Richmond region. They recycle at least 60 % or more of everything they pick up.
  • Trash Fairies: local company that provides valet doorstep recycling and trash service for multi-family housing.
