Colonial Heights Regional Leader in Recycling Efforts

A little more than a year ago, City leaders made tough decisions and implemented new programs for residential collection of household trash and recyclables. Since implementing the program changes on July 1, 2012, the City decreased its solid waste stream- household trash being collected and sent to landfill- by over 500 tons; and curbside recycling increased by a similar *amount (*540 more tons recycled than the previous year)!

In addition, CVWMA program statistics show citizen participation nearly doubled to more than 60%!  This rate places Colonial Heights as the leader amount all localities in CVWMA for resident participation in curbside recycling!

Colonial Heights has reduced its waste stream by increasing its recycling efforts at the curb. We hope that others in the region will follow their lead.

Chesterfield County Implements New Recycling Program for Government Offices & Schools

Starting August 1, Chesterfield County is launching its latest recycling initiative to reduce the amount of waste generated in the county’s public offices and schools. Through a contract with Virginia Waste Services, facilities including 62 schools, the Technical Center and various county building will have 8 cubic yard containers strategically placed to collect recyclables from these facilities. The Department of General Services, Environmental Division, estimates that this initiative will divert 2000 tons annually of recyclables from going into local landfills. Stay tuned!

August E-cycling Opportunities

Chesterfield and Goochland counties will each host an electronics recycling collection event for their residents this month. The Chesterfield collection event will be held on Saturday, August 3 from 9:30 am - 1 pm at the Southern Convenience Center, 6700 Landfill Drive. The Goochland collection event is set for Saturday, August 17, from 9 am - 1 pm at the Manakin Farmer’s Market.  For additional e-cycling opportunities through CVWMA, click here.

Be Responsible. Storm drains are not Garbage Cans!

Storm DrainYou can do your part to help prevent litter and pollution! Please do not throw or pour unwanted items down local storm drains. Recycle your bottles, cans,
and other recyclables and dispose of your trash in a trash or garbage can/cart.

Did you know that what goes into a storm drain ends up in our streams, rivers, and eventually the Chesapeake Bay? We can all help keep our waterways clean and litter free!
