Recycling in Charles City

Find out how and where to recycle various items

Charles City County offers three sites for disposal of most residential waste generated by residents.

The centers are provided for the residents of Charles City at no cost to the citizens through our landfill agreement with WM. The centers are for regular household trash and recyclables. To use these sites, a customer must have one of the following:

1. Current Charles City County Vehicle Sticker;

2. Letter from Director of Public Utilities; or

3. Refuse Sticker or Permit issued by Charles City County Public Works.

 

 

    Appliances (White Goods)

    Appliances and white goods such as refrigerators, stoves, washing machines. Recycle at Charles City County Solid Waste Convenience Centers. All liquids must be drained from items. Fees may apply for Freon removal.

    Microwaves and other small appliances. Recycle at CVWMA special electronics recycling collection events.

    Automobile Fluids

    Used Oil and Used Antifreeze (residential only). Recycle at the Munford Road Convenience Center during normal business hours. Quantities of 5 gallons or less.

    Other fluids and oil filters not accepted.

    Batteries

    Alkaline. Safe for disposal in your trash or recycle through Call2Recycle.

    Lead acid. Recycle at Charles City County Convenience Centers, automotive supply stores, Battery Barn or Batteries Plus.

    Rechargeable. Recycle at Charles City County Solid Waste Convenience Centers, home improvement centers, electronics retailers or Batteries Plus.

    Clothing and Shoes

    Donate to local charities or resell at consignment stores.

    Electronics

    Recycle unwanted or non-working electronics.

    Cell Phones. Donate or return to your service provider. Recycle at CVWMA special electronics recycling collection events.

    Computers and Computer Accessories. Fees may apply. Computer systems (hard drive, CPU, accessories such as cables, wires, keyboards, mouse, speakers, etc.), printers, scanners & copiers, fax machines, VCRs & camcorders, stereos, etc. Recycle at CVWMA special electronics recycling collection events.

    Televisions. Donate working TVs to charitable organizations. Newer, operational items may be donatable to a charitable organization, but check first to find out if the item is desired. Recycle at CVWMA special collection event (fees may apply).

    Stereos and VCRs. Donate to Goodwill or thrift store or recycle at CVWMA special collection event.

    Toner and Ink. Recycle with cartridge recycling companies or office supply retail stores.

    Glass

    Glass bottles and jars (no lids please). Recycle at Charles City County  Convenience Centers.

    No other glass items accepted for recycling.

    Lawnmowers

    Push Mowers and Weed Eaters. Motors must be stripped and drained of any fluids. Recycle at Charles City County Solid Waste Convenience Centers.

    Riding Lawn Mowers. Drop off at Charles City County Landfill during normal business hours.

    Metal

    Aluminum and steel cans ( no lids, please). Recycle at Charles City County  Convenience Centers.

    Check with county staff on other type of accepted metals for recycling.

    Oil

    Used Oil. Recycle at the Munford Road Convenience Center during normal business hours.

    Paints and Solvents

    Latex Paint. Only paints that have been dried with kitty litter in the can or other drying agents accepted. Dispose of at Charles City County Solid Waste Convenience Centers.

    Other paints (oil-based) and solvents not accepted. Check with county staff for special household hazardous waste collection events.

    Paper

    Cardboard boxes and Mixed Paper (such as brown paper bags, newspaper, magazines, junk mail, cracker boxes, cereal boxes, macaroni boxes, phone books, white office paper.) Recycle at Charles City County  Convenience Centers.

    Plastics

    NO PLASTIC BAGS, please. Keep plastic bags, wraps and films out of drop-off recycling containers. Return these to grocery stores or other retailers. Find participating retailers closest to you.

    Plastic bottles (#1 and # 2, narrow-neck only). Recycle at Charles City County  Convenience Centers.

    Tires

    Used Tires. Return to retail location where new tires are purchased, or recycle at annual Charles City County Tire Amnesty Day.

    Yard and Vegetative

    Tree limbs and brush over four (4) feet long or limbs not bundled and bagged are not accepted at Charles City County Solid Waste Convenience Centers. Large loads that are not bundled may be taken directly to the Charles City County landfill. The load must be weighed.

    • 1-800-Got-Junk?: national company that loads and hauls away unwanted items to recycling or waste facilities for a flat fee (check the telephone directory for similar waste hauling companies)
    • Junk King of Central Virginia: local company that provides turnkey junk removal services to residential and business customers in great Richmond region. They recycle at least 60 % or more of everything they pick up.
    • Car donations. See telephone directory or search online for addresses and phone numbers of local charitable organizations that accept car donations.
