While
you are out and about this spring and summer, be on the lookout for
recycling bins set out at special events. CVWMA recently started
promoting a special event recycling program to
organizers of fairs, festivals and expos.
Last fall we tested the concept of event
recycling by placing some bins at a few events around town. We were
pleased to find a special recycling container, designed to accept
only plastic bottles and cans. Event goers felt that "it was very
obvious that this bin is meant for recycling."
A problem with recycling at special
events is that trash can get mixed in with the recycling, however we
did not find this to be the case due to the design of the recycling
bins. There are four round holes in the top of the container for
bottles and cans. A clear plastic bag lets event-goers see that this
container is for recyclables only.
Because there are many community events
held annually in Central Virginia, we wanted to start capturing some
of the recyclables being generated at these events. We hope this
will help event-goers reduce waste and recycle valuable materials
instead of landfilling them.
If you would like recycling at your
public event, visit our website for
more information. The recycling bins are available on a first
come first serve basis to event coordinators in the CVWMA service
area. |
