    Recycling Education Programs

    CVWMA wants to help you recycle and learn why it is important. CVWMA staff provide free recycling education programs to schools, scouts, clubs, libraries, and other groups that live within our 13 member localities year round. In addition, staff created an Educational Resource page,  Teacher Resources page ,as well as, educational resources on our Pinterest page.

    Schools

    CVWMA’s Recycling Education and Outreach Specialist provides free interactive Journey To the MRF (pronounced “murf”) recycling education programs to students in PreK-through Grade 12 attending public, private, and home schools within our 13 member localities. This cross-curricular program covers the following Virginia Standards of Learning( SOLs). Presentation is approximately 30 minutes and includes a 5 minute video/virtual “field trip” inside a Material Recovery Facility (or MRF) located in Chester, VA.

    CVWMA’s Journey To the MRF (pronounced “murf”) Presentation

    Our most popular item is our award winning * educational program Journey Through the MRF a custom video about recycling in central Virginia. Follow the journey of items collected in local curbside and drop-off recycling  containers through the MRF (Material Recovery Facility- pronounced “murf”) and eventually back into retail stores. (* SWANA Silver Public Education Excellence Award)

    The 30 minute interactive recycling program includes short talk, 5 minute video (virtual field trip to a “murf”) and samples of products made from recycled materials. This cross-curricular program covers the Virginia Standards of Learning listed above. Each participant receives free educational and fun materials made from recyclables for use in the classroom and at home.

    Journey through a Landfill Presentation

    CVWMA staff provide free programs to schools, scouts, clubs, and other groups. The 45 minute interactive landfill program includes short talk, 6 minute video (virtual field trip-Virginia Trekkers Podcast # 42 (Henrico Landfill))which  show viewers what happens to your trash after you throw it in the garbage can/cart. See where all it goes! Learn about solid waste, waste reduction, recycling, litter, waste compaction, landfill monitoring, groundwater, methane gas, landfill management and waste to energy.  Learn what you can do to reduce the amount of garbage/trash you send to the landfill. It’s an exciting place with lots to explore!

    CVWMA Educational *Kits

    No time for outside speaker? Need a classroom activity? Program  for afterschool club or scout group? CVWMA provides two educational kits for use, if you do not want to have CVWMA staff come and do a program, and live in one of our 13 member localities. Please note that we do have *$25.00 refundable deposit for use of one of our educational kits.     Journey Through the MRF Educational Kit

    Our most popular item is our award winning * educational program  Journey Through the MRF a custom video about recycling in central Virginia that comes with educational products. Kids follow the journey of items collected in local curbside and drop-off recycling containers through the MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) and eventually back into retail stores. The educational kit comes in a tote bag made from recycled soda bottles and includes samples of products made from recycled materials and a wealth of waste educational resources and activities for students in kindergarten through high school.  A MRF DVD/Recycling Podcast DVD included. This kit is correlated to the cross-curricular Virginia Standards of Learning listed above on this webpage.

    • There is a $25 refundable deposit required for loan of the kit. Kits can be checked out for two weeks only.
    • If you would like for CVWMA staff to provide a customized Journey Through the MRF presentation to your school (classroom/grade level specific); school club; After School Program; or scout group, please complete this form.
    • In 2009 and 2010, the CVWMA was most fortunate to have the opportunity to work with The Virginia Trekkers, four local educators as well as several local TV networks to provide updated recycling information and video footage.

    The Journey Through a Landfill Activity Guide is a wonderful “hands-on” teaching tool for helping students and adults understand how a landfill works and how today’s landfills differ from dumps of the past. Geared towards upper elementary and middle school students.
